Trip to Taj Mahal – Day 2

Helen at Taj

Before we embarked on our home stay and school visits, Asia Education Foundation organized a cultural excursion to the Taj Mahal, a grand mausoleum made of white marble and built in Agra between 1631 and 1648.  It was built by the emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite and most trusted wife. Both Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan are buried at the mausoleum.

The trip there and back took up most of the day with an unplanned stop when our bus broke down, and a camel ride!

Door to Imagination

Feeling inspired with so many wonderful artworks across the school as part of our 2015 Art Show, I created a door that took me back to my European holiday to Spain, Portugal and France.  The theme of the Art Show was Door to Imagination.  Having loved my holiday to Europe in 2014 I decided to recreate some of the scenery and doorways that were so warm and inviting.

Helen's door

To create my door I used Mediterranean blue crepe paper and individually made leaves by students across the school, as well some bits and pieces from home including my own still life artwork resting on my easel.

Principal for a Day – Fiona Menzies CEO

Principal For A Day is a Victoria-wide event which provides business and community leaders with the opportunity to experience first-hand a normal day in a government school.  Our school is lucky to have Fiona Menzies, CEO of Creative Partnerships Australia as our visiting “Principal”.

Fiona Menzies commenced as CEO of the newly created Creative Partnerships Australia in February 2013.

Immediately prior to that, Fiona was the Development Manager at the Wheeler Centre for Books, Writing and Ideas, where she was part of the inaugural team that established the Wheeler Centre as Melbourne’s newest cultural institution in 2009.

Fiona’s interest in private giving to the arts began when studying at the University of Melbourne where she completed her undergraduate thesis on a private arts collection donated to the State of South Australia. Fiona then completed a Masters degree at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, again focussing on a donated collection; costume designs for a ground breaking 1914 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Fiona then took a sidestep into politics where she worked as Adviser then Chief of Staff to two Commonwealth Government Arts Ministers. During that time, Fiona worked across the arts and film portfolio, but also continued her interest in giving by playing a key role in the introduction of new measures in the taxation system to increase private sector support for the arts.

Following her time in government and some time out of the paid workforce while looking after small children, Fiona worked in media and communications for a property investment firm, then for a children’s cancer research charity in Melbourne.

Fiona has served on the board of the Dame Nellie Melba Opera Trust and is currently on a school foundation board in Melbourne.

We hope that Fiona enjoys her visit to our wonderful school.

Rainbow Salad Wrap

JO_FRDay_CMYK_Master_Logo_AOn Friday 16th May, SAHPS joined in the Food Revolution Day.  Mr Pody, our 1/2 teacher organized the event through our local Safeway store.

It is an initiative from Jamie Oliver, a renowned chef, that highlights the impact of good food on the health and wellbeing of our children.

Safeway delivered crates and crates of food to our school in the morning, and by lunchtime all our of students were involved in the excitement of making Rainbow-salad-wraps.

You can see some wonderful photos of our kids and teachers enjoying the day, on the school website.

We thanked Safeway and displayed the student work that represented their learning on the day.

SAHPS Biggest Morning Tea

IMG_5925

These beautiful cup cakes were made especially for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea by one of our lovely mums.  She led a cake decorating workshop for some of other parents and I was invited to join in.  This event was part of the Community Hub at the school that is led by Julie.

The cup cakes were sold at the school’s Biggest Morning Tea to raise funds for the Cancer Council.   We raised $135.50 today 🙂
